Heading to Mexico for the winter? Read this before you start your trip!

December 03, 2018

Heading to Mexico for the winter sounds so nice when these cold winter months roll in. We have dozens of customers that start their journey south as soon as December gets here. Many of our tropic-seeking customers drive themselves down to the winter homes in order to bring a form of transportation with them for the months they are there. This is a great way to save money on car rentals and other modes of transportation during the winter months, however, there is a catch that most folks don’t think about: your insurance policy in the United States doesn’t actually cover you or your vehicle while you are in Mexico!

Most people don’t realize that not all carriers that provide insurance in the United States are able to provide insurance in other countries such as Mexico. Additionally, Mexico insurance laws require that driver’s purchase liability insurance from an insurance company that’s licensed and legally able to provide coverage in Mexico. With that said, it’s important to make sure you get a Mexico insurance policy before you leave for your trip. There are dozens of insurance companies in the United States that are able to provide Mexican auto insurance. Mexican auto insurance will still provide you with the liability coverage and physical damage coverage for your vehicle, however, specific coverages details and rates will vary among insurance carriers, just as they do here in the United States. Talk to your local agent about your options. Ensuring you’re covered now will provide piece of mind as you travel long distances to get to your desired destination!
